Connecting the Dots with Bespoke ELA

Bespoke ELA

Bespoke ELA: Innovative Lessons to Spark Student Engagement is a new professional development book, specifically for secondary English teachers. I was fortunate enough to sit down (virtually) with the author, Meredith Dobbs.

The professional development scene for secondary ELA teachers. . . can be, interesting. We’ve all sat through presentations with someone who has not taught in a decade.

So I was really excited when my friend Meredith asked if I wanted to preview her book. I read it over the course of a week, and I could tell that the ideas were solid. I asked Meredith (the owner of Bespoke ELA) some questions, and our discussion is below.

Q1: What inspired you to write Bespoke ELA: Innovative Lessons to Spark Student Engagement?

A1:
Teaching English Language Arts for over two decades, I often noticed how traditional lessons sometimes failed to truly captivate students, especially in today’s fast-paced, digital world. I wanted to create a resource that goes beyond worksheets and rote assignments—something that sparks curiosity, creativity, and real-world connection. Bespoke ELA is my way of sharing innovative, hands-on lesson ideas that meet students where they are and make learning an adventure. What sets this book apart is that it includes 50 free downloadable lessons tied to many of the projects and activities, giving teachers ready-made, practical resources to implement immediately and help spark engagement in their classrooms. I really wanted to give teachers something that they could literally implement in their classes tomorrow because I know that’s what I need.

Q2: How does your book address the diverse needs and interests of students?

A2:
One of the core principles in Bespoke ELA is personalization—tailoring lessons to fit the unique backgrounds, passions, and learning styles of students. The lessons are designed to be flexible, incorporating multiple modes of expression such as writing, digital media, art, and performance. Whether a student loves music, history, or storytelling, there are entry points for engagement. Plus, the projects encourage collaboration and critical thinking, helping students build confidence and see their own voices reflected in the curriculum. I want the topics themselves to hook students beyond the same, old, recycled ones of the past. I wanted to find a way to motivate all learners.

Q3: What are three lessons or projects from the book that you’re particularly excited about?

A3:
There are so many projects I love, but three really stand out.

First, the Star-Crossed Lovers Anthology—it’s a deep dive into timeless themes of love and conflict that spans literature, music, film, and history, encouraging students to create their own original stories. Second, the Paranormal Press Investigative Zine gives students a chance to blend creativity with research as they explore mysterious phenomena, honing their critical thinking while producing unique, artistic zines. Third, the Infamous Criminal Case Notebook challenges students to analyze real criminal cases, evaluate media bias, and reflect on societal issues, making research both rigorous and compelling. Each project exemplifies the blend of engagement, creativity, and critical thinking that Bespoke ELA aims to inspire.

Thanks, Meredith! I’m excited to see how you help other ELA teachers.
