Description
Add these activities for the “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst to teach analysis, study language in context, and work on comprehension! These literature activities will provide an anticipatory set, assess comprehension, practice identifying parts of a sentence, and encourage analytical thinking.
Included in these activities for “The Scarlet Ibis”:
→ The anticipatory writing activity. Students will recall a time they felt emotions similar to what the narrator does in “The Scarlet Ibis.”
→ A short-answer reading quiz. The quiz has five questions focusing on comprehension. Use it alone as an after-reading quiz or include it in a larger test.
→ A multiple-choice reading quiz. The quiz has five multiple choice questions (with three possible answers).
→ A vocabulary activity. Students will use context clues to define seven words from the story.
→ A vocabulary quiz. This covers seven vocabulary words from the story in a matching format.
→ Interactive notebook pieces. The pieces have unique visuals and cover theme, setting, conflict, and symbols. (They are pictured in the thumbnail.)
→ Mentor sentences. I pulled ten sentences from the short story for students to identify subjects and verbs and then direct objects or predicate words.
→ An editable slide deck that works well as a post-reading review.
→ A complete lesson plan that walks you through the process for teaching “The Scarlet Ibis.”
